How to use lines to create quote styles using Canva

Hi, and welcome, or welcome back, to my YouTube channel. I’m Sue Pollard from Maker Biz Graphics, and I help makers and creative entrepreneurs create consistent on-brand graphics with ease and confidence. In this video, I’m going to show you how to create a different style and a different feel for your quote posts just using lines. It’s very simple, but very effective. So, let’s hop into Canva.

How to add lines to your quote posts

So here we are in Canva, and I’m just going to run through a few different ways that you can add lines to your quote posts. And how you can change them to create a different style, which will give you a different feel for your type of post. And then, once you have got a style that you really like, you can then just use that. And for each time that you create a new quote, you can just use it as a template and add in the new text as you need to.

So, just to get started, I’ve just created a few just generic quote posts here. So I’m just going to work with these. Obviously, this will be whatever you are going to be using as your quote. And for the colors, you’ll be adding your own brand colors, but this is just for an example.

How to find the line tool in Canva

So there are two ways that you can add lines to your design. You can either come over to Elements. And if you click on Elements, you’ll see it comes up here and you can then just look through and decide which sort of line that you’re interested in. Let’s say we’ll go for this one. And that will then appear on your layout and you can change it from there.

Or alternatively, you can just use the L key on your keyboard and a line will appear. But if you do it this way you will just get a straight line, and then you can actually edit it from here. So up here, you’ll see there are some different options now that you can actually use to change this line. Which is really great, because you can change the thickness by coming up to the line weight here, you can make it as thick or as thin as you like.

How to choose different styles of lines

And you’ll see as I’m making that larger, that it’s actually got rounded corners. So you’ve got a choice now, if you want to have round or straight edges. So you come across to this tab, and you’ll see here you’ve got different options. So the top one gives you straight edges. Second one gives you round edges. You can have dots, or dashes. So that’s one way that you can change the line style.

It now gives you a lot of different options. So let’s go with the dots here, and just change the color. I’ve just got some different pallets here that I’m using. So let’s just make that, say, dark green. So if I like that and decide to go with it, I could just decide to duplicate that and then line it up with the design. And I like the look of that, so that’s going to be my first one.

How to add a symbol to the end of the line

Okay. Let’s move on to the next one. So, I’m just going to, again, click L on the keyboard, move the line up. Let’s do something different this time, just so you can get a feel for how using a different line can create a different feel for your graphic. So, with this one, let’s use a thicker line. Actually, not too thick, because what I’m going to do is come across to these tabs. Now, there are two of these, one will add an element to the left side of your line and the other one to the right-hand side.

With the line highlighted, I’m just going to come down and pick one of these. Let’s go for the arrow. So you see that that arrow appears at the end of the line now. I’m going to go and choose the same one for the other side of the line. I just click on that, and there you go. You’ve now got a completely different element to your line, and it just gives quite a different feel from the one that you created before.

So, again, you could change the color. Let’s go for the light one this time. And then I might just do the same design and drop that in at the bottom. So you can see how you can really change the look and the feel of your graphic just by putting in just different elements to your lines.

Creating different styles using colour and different sizes

I’ve got a couple more in different colors, so I’ll run through these. Here we go, just click the L again. This time let’s go a thicker line. Let’s leave the rounded corners on. Let’s come and bring in a different color. Might go with the pink. And you’re just going to line it up.

Okay. And then, another example, just to show you how, again, it can just have a very different feel by choosing a different element. So for this one, let’s go the dots again but let’s keep them really small. And then … I don’t know if we want something on the end. Let’s have a look and see how this looks. So that’s on the left, and that’s on the right. I don’t mind that. Let’s come across, just change the color again. Could go for something a little bit different from this color palette. Line it up.

Enjoy experimenting with the various options

And, finally, we’ll do one more. It’s quite fun. Once you start playing with it, I think you’ll just get something that you really like the look of, and that’ll just help you decide what sort of style you want to use for your own brand’s style. And then once you’ve actually got that, like I said before, you can then just save it as a template so that you can come back to it again, and all you have to do is then add in whatever text that you’re going to be using for your quote.

You can see there, we’ve got some different styles which really do give a different look and feel to each post. So choose one, have a play around, choose one that you really like. To be consistent, use it for your quotes. And it’ll just be a lot quicker to be able to create your quotes that way, and also it will give you a much more consistent look and feel to your quote posts.
